In Memory of Art Field

CAMBRIDGE, ON – The Provincial Junior Hockey League is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Art Field, a true pillar of junior hockey and an instrumental figure within our league community.

As the founder of the Little Britain Merchants in 1978, Art dedicated more than five decades to the growth of the game at the grassroots level. His impact extended far beyond building a successful hockey club—he fostered a culture rooted in family, community, and pride that continues to define the organization today.

A devoted family man, Art brought the same care, compassion, and commitment to the rink that he did to his own home. Generations of players, coaches, and volunteers were welcomed into the Merchants family under his leadership, each benefiting from his passion for the game and unwavering support.

Art’s contributions to hockey in Ontario were formally recognized with the Ontario Hockey Association Gold Stick Award in 2015, a testament to his outstanding dedication and service to the game. In 2024, the Little Britain Merchants were inducted into the Lindsay & District Sports Hall of Fame—an honour that reflects the lasting legacy Art helped build over decades of commitment and leadership.

Through his family, the Merchants organization, and the countless individuals he mentored and inspired, Art’s impact will continue to be felt across the hockey community for generations to come.

On behalf of the Provincial Junior Hockey League, we extend our deepest condolences to the Field family, the Little Britain Merchants, and all those who had the privilege of knowing Art.
