CAMBRIDGE, ON – This weekend in the PJHL delivered everything fans could ask for—big offensive surges, clutch scoring, and multiple games decided in extra time. With teams jockeying for position across every division, here’s a look back at the standout moments from an action-packed few days around the league.
Friday Highlights
Thamesford Trojans (10) vs Lucan Irish (3)
The Lucan Irish visited the Thamesford Trojans on Friday night, and after a 2–2 game midway through the first period, the Trojans exploded offensively with eight straight goals. Led by multi-goal efforts from Hayden Kemps and Ayden Hakkers, and with 16 different Trojans recording points, Thamesford cruised to a dominant 10–3 win.
Amherstview Jets (6) vs Port Hope Panthers (5)
Amherstview and Port Hope went back and forth in a game that ended with late-game heroics. The teams traded goals throughout, and Christian Sokoljuk tied the game late in the third with a shorthanded marker for the Panthers. But the hero for the Jets was Jack Churchill, who completed his hat trick with just 30 seconds remaining to secure the 6–5 Amherstview win.
Napanee Raiders (4) vs Frankford Huskies (3)
In another East Tod matchup, the Napanee Raiders hosted the red-hot Frankford Huskies. Napanee came out firing, scoring the first three goals and holding that lead until the midway point of the second period. Frankford answered with three straight goals to tie the game heading into the third, but Ryan McGee delivered the game-winner for the Raiders, snapping the Huskies’ lengthy win streak.
Dunnville Mudcats (4) vs Streetsville Derbys (3)
The Streetsville Derbys traveled to Dunnville on Friday night, and the Mudcats continued their strong recent play. Goaltenders Noah Robins and Declan McGandy were stellar, each making 40-plus saves, but Dunnville found the back of the net one extra time. Mark Gibson’s two first-period goals proved to be the difference in a 4–3 Mudcats victory.
Walkerton Capitals (4) vs Hanover Barons (2)
The North Pollock division–leading Hanover Barons visited Walkerton in what looked like a winnable matchup, but the Capitals had other plans. Hanover struck first with two early goals, but after a Sami Douglas-Najem tally midway through the second, Walkerton rallied in the third. Brodie Palinsky’s shorthanded game-winning goal capped off the comeback as the Capitals stunned the Barons 4–2 on home ice.
Wellesley Applejacks (3) vs New Hamburg Firebirds (2) SO
In a battle for positioning atop the South Doherty division, Wellesley and New Hamburg traded chances all night. Jordan Jacobs tied the game for the Firebirds with just 16 seconds remaining. Both goaltenders were exceptional—Deklan Jermol stopped 44 of 46 shots for New Hamburg, while Xavier Bussiere turned away 33 of 34 for Wellesley. With overtime solving nothing, the Applejacks edged the Firebirds in the shootout thanks to the lone goal from Ryan Brenton.
Huntsville Otters (5) vs Penetang Kings (4) OT
Extra time was needed in Huntsville as the Otters and Kings traded goals throughout regulation. Owen Rueck tied the game midway through the third to force overtime, where Rhett MacFarlane completed his hat trick with the overtime winner, lifting the Otters to a 5–4 upset victory.
Saturday Highlights
Fergus Whalers (3) vs Hanover Barons (1)
In the PJHL’s spotlight matchup of the week, two of the league’s top teams met in a North Pollock showdown. Although the Barons hold a slim edge in the standings, it was the Whalers who controlled the game, scoring three times between the late first and early second periods. Carter Curran stopped 31 of 32 shots, backstopping Fergus to a 3–1 road win.
Aylmer Spitfires (5) vs North Middlesex Stars (4) OT
The West Yeck division remains as tight as ever, with seven teams battling for top spot, and that urgency was evident in this matchup. Aylmer fired 52 shots and North Middlesex answered with 74. Noah Vandenbrink tied the game for the Stars with a shorthanded goal late in the third to force overtime, but Donovan Appleford played hero for Aylmer, scoring the winner in extra time.
Little Britain Merchants (3) vs Caledon Golden Hawks (2) OT
In another overtime finish, the Little Britain Merchants held an early third-period lead after two quick goals, but Caledon responded with two of their own to force extra time. The Merchants wasted no time in overtime, as Beckham Reznik scored just 22 seconds in to secure the 3–2 victory.
Dundas Blues (2) vs Hagersville Hawks (1)
It was an unexpectedly tight contest between the first-place Dundas Blues and last-place Hagersville Hawks in the South Bloomfield division. After a scoreless opening 40 minutes, Spencer Gendall broke the ice for Dundas early in the third, but Tyler Matthews answered quickly for Hagersville. Ultimately, Alexandros Economou delivered the game-winner for the Blues, sealing a 2–1 victory.
Essex 73’s (4) vs Amherstburg Admirals (3)
Despite a 52–17 shot advantage for Essex, the Admirals controlled much of the game. After a Brayden Hebert goal early in the second, Amherstburg held a 3–1 lead before Essex rallied with two quick goals. With neither team able to break the deadlock late, Jack Lewis scored the game-winner in the final minute, completing Essex’s come-from-behind 4–3 win.
Sunday Highlights
Dundas Blues (5) vs Port Dover Sailors (4) OT
It was another tight contest for the Blues as they traveled to Port Dover. Dundas jumped out to a 4–0 lead early in the second period, but the Sailors stormed back with four straight goals, including two from Dylan Courrier, who tied the game to force overtime. But Nate Tarka ended the comeback bid, scoring the overtime winner to give Dundas a 5–4 victory.
Kincardine Bulldogs (3) vs Mount Forest Patriots (2)
The Mount Forest Patriots visited Kincardine on Sunday in front of a strong crowd at the Davidson Centre. In a tight game heading into the third, a late hooking penalty put the Bulldogs on the power play as they trailed 2–1. Caleb Bowler capitalized to tie the game, and in overtime, Bowler struck again to secure the 3–2 home win for Kincardine.
