Top Weekend Performances – March 20-23, 2026

CAMBRIDGE, ON – The opening weekend of the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Divisional Finals set the tone for what promises to be an intense next stage of the postseason. With series getting underway across the league, several players delivered standout performances—ranging from dominant shutouts to multi-point efforts—helping their teams gain early advantages.

Birk Cassels (Essex 73’s) — 31-save shutout

The Essex 73’s and Lakeshore Canadiens opened the West Stobbs Division Final on Friday night, following the Canadiens’ hard-fought seven-game series against the Blenheim Blades. In what was a tightly contested, low-scoring matchup, the 73’s broke the deadlock late in the third period—accounting for the game’s only goal.  Essex goaltender Birk Cassels was exceptional between the pipes. Coming off a significant rest period after their previous series against Amherstburg, Cassels showed no signs of rust, turning aside all 31 shots he faced. The shutout marked his fourth in just six playoff appearances, further cementing his dominance this postseason.

Noah Lundgren (Fergus Whalers) — 22-save shutout
Tyler Ewald (Fergus Whalers) — 2 goals

The Fergus Whalers made a statement in Game 1 with a commanding 6–0 victory over the Hanover Barons. Goaltender Noah Lundgren delivered his strongest performance of the playoffs, stopping all 22 shots for the shutout. Offensively, Tyler Ewald continued to be a key contributor for Fergus, scoring twice in the series opener and setting the pace for a high-powered Whalers attack.

Nash Giles (Dundas Blues) — 2 goals
Brennen Mate (Dundas Blues) — 2 goals
Spencer Gendall (Dundas Blues) — 1 goal, 3 assists

The Dundas Blues hosted the Niagara RiverHawks in Game 1 of a highly anticipated Bloomfield Division Final—and wasted no time asserting control. The Blues surged to a 3–0 lead after the first period, highlighted by a pair of goals from Nash Giles. Brennen Mate added two more goals to extend the lead to 5–0, while Spencer Gendall delivered a dominant four-point performance (one goal, three assists). The complete team effort powered Dundas to a convincing win and a 1–0 series lead.

Keegan Metcalf (Tavistock Braves) — 2 goals, 1 assist

The Tavistock Braves continue to roll through the postseason. In a 5–1 Game 2 victory over the Woodstock Navy Vets, the Braves remained undefeated in the playoffs as they push toward a Doherty Division title and South Conference championship aspirations. A major driver of that success has been Keegan Metcalf, who added two goals and an assist in Game 2. Metcalf has been a consistent offensive force throughout the playoffs, playing a key role in Tavistock’s dominant run.

Benjamin Gustafson (North Middlesex Stars) — 46-save shutout

North Middlesex Stars goaltender Benjamin Gustafson carried his strong play forward with a stellar performance in Game 2 against the Mount Brydges Bulldogs, stopping all 46 shots he faced in a shutout victory. Following a challenging start to the playoffs in his first three appearances, Gustafson has found his form in a major way. Over his last nine games, he has posted an impressive .941 save percentage, emerging as a critical piece in the Stars’ postseason success.
