CAMBRIDGE, ON – The Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL) has confirmed that junior hockey will continue in Lucan for the 2026–27 season, despite the recent announcement from the Lucan Irish Six that they will not renew their membership in the league.
In a statement released by the organization, the Lucan Irish Six cited a thorough review of the team’s current circumstances and long-term direction as the reason behind the difficult decision. After months of evaluation and discussion regarding their position within both the league and the Ontario Hockey Association, the organization determined that stepping away at this time was the most responsible course of action.
The franchise expressed pride in its history, acknowledging the contributions of its players, coaches, staff, volunteers, board members, donors, and loyal supporters. The organization also extended thanks to the Lucan Community Memorial Centre for its continued support over the years.
While this marks the end of the Irish Six in its current form, the PJHL has moved quickly to ensure the continuity of junior hockey in the community.
Commissioner Terry Whiteside has confirmed that a new ownership and governance group will be established in Lucan, ensuring the community remains home to PJHL hockey next season.
As part of that process, individuals interested in becoming part of the new Board of Directors are encouraged to submit their resume and a brief biography to commissioner@thepj.ca. The league will review all applicants and determine the composition of the new leadership group.
In addition to board positions, the PJHL is also seeking community members interested in supporting the team through an auxiliary group. These volunteers will play a key role in organizing fundraisers and assisting with game day operations, helping to ensure a strong foundation for the franchise moving forward.
The league has also confirmed that all players who were part of the Lucan Irish Six at the conclusion of the season will have their playing rights retained by the new organization. This provides important continuity as the team transitions into a new era.
The PJHL emphasized that it will work as quickly as possible to finalize the new group, giving the incoming organization the best opportunity to prepare for the 2026–27 season both on and off the ice.
Although the departure of the Irish Six marks the end of a chapter, the focus now shifts to rebuilding and sustaining junior hockey in Lucan — with strong community involvement expected to play a central role in what comes next.
