The PJHL Welcomes the Streetsville Derbys as Newest Franchise

Cambridge, ON –The Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL) has announced that the Streetsville Derbys will become the newest member of the PJHL starting in the 2024/2025 season. The Derbys will be the 63rd team under the PJHL umbrella and will join the Bloomfield division in the South conference this coming season.

The Streetsville Derbys ownership team consists of Adrianne Fekete, Jeff Duggan (GM of the Vic Johnston Community Centre), Todd J Smith (BOD of the Vic Johnston Community Centre), Nico Fekete, and Matthew Romanick, who spoke on the team’s excitement to join the PJHL family.

“We are extremely honoured to reintroduce the iconic hockey team, the Streetsville Derbys, into the PJHL” says Adrianne Fekete. “With deep roots in the community spanning generations, they are set to reignite the excitement of hockey in the village.”

The Derbys’ name has it’s history in Streetsville, starting in 1967 as part of the Suburban Jr. C league. Most recently, the Streetsville Derby’s were part of the Ontario Junior Hockey League from 1993 to 2011, until they merged into the Coburg Cougars. Fekete and her team voiced their excitement to bring back the Derbys name to the Streetsville Community.

“This season marks the return of the Derbys, promising an outstanding junior hockey experience for Streetsville fans. The team will proudly call the renowned Vic Johnston Community Centre their home arena, where the legendary Derby Den legacy first took flight. Stay tuned for a daily dose of thrilling events, innovative initiatives, and interactive updates from the hockey club on our social media platforms.”

With the introduction of the 63 franchise, PJHL Commissioner Terry Whiteside looks forward to increasing the level of competition across all divisions, and providing more opportunity for incoming players.

“The PJHL welcomes Streetsville into our league.” says Terry. “Their group has stressed that Streetsville is a small community at heart and that they are very much like the small towns throughout our league.  This addition brings the PJHL to our full complement of teams and we look forward to helping the new group in Streetsville become part of the PJHL.”

The Streetsville Derbys will make their home ice debut in September, and will match-up against Dundas, Dunnville, Glanbrook, Grimsby, Hagersville, Niagara and Port Dover as part of the Bloomfield division. Updates on camps and season openers will be released at a later date. Head coach to be announced this week, check the Streetsville Derbys.
